چکیده

We propose Remote Harm-Diagnostics (RHD) as a new defensive tactic against malware and phishing attacks. RHD is a server-side tool that harvests data from clients to detect signs of previous or ongoing compromise. RHD can supplement client-side protections such as virus checkers and anti-phishing toolbars. Given its “soft,” i.e., probabilistic nature, RHD interfaces naturally with risk-based authentication engines. We introduce RHD techniques that require no installation of client-side executables. These techniques permit servers to harvest selected Internet browsing history from visiting clients. We describe a lightweight, prototype RHD system that offers server-side detection of many forms of client compromise. Privacy-protection being a keystone of our approach, we introduce mechanisms for client-side filtering of data. We also briefly discuss audit and policy enhancements to help RHD systems comply with regulatory guidelines like the OECD Fair Information Practice Principles.

Analysis of Performing Secure Remote Vehicle Diagnostics

Traditionally, diagnostics of vehicles is done by plugging a physical device into a diagnostics interface in the vehicle; however, over the last years OEMs are considering to perform remote diagnostics. But connecting remotely to a vehicle opens a new entrypoint for attackers. Hence, it is important to secure the remote diagnostics procedure. We first provide an analysis of the security propert...

Ubiquitous Computing and the Double Immutability of Remote Diagnostics Technology: An Exploration into Six Cases of Remote Diagnostics Technology Use

The aim of this paper is to display the use a specific type of ubiquitous computing technology—remote diagnostics technology—in organizations and, in particular, the way in which the technology is enacted in remote and local maintenance groups. By taking a case study approach, we look into the use of remote diagnostics technology in the maintenance industry. Drawing from actor-network theory, a...

Categorical Data Regression Diagnostics for Remote Access Servers

Owing to the growing concerns over data confidentiality, many national statistical agencies are considering remote access servers to disseminate data to the public. With remote servers, users submit requests for output from statistical models fit using the collected data, but they are not allowed access to the data. Remote servers also should enable users to check the fit of their models; howev...

Remote Vehicle Diagnostics over the Internet using the DoIP Protocol

Next generation vehicles will provide powerful connectivity and telematics services, enabling many new applications of vehicle communication. We will in this paper study the opportunities of performing remote vehicle diagnostics, where the diagnostic tool (test equipment) and the vehicle are separated by an internetwork, e.g. the Internet. The development of a prototype system for remote vehicl...

The Embedded Panopticon: Visibility Issues of Remote Diagnostics Surveillance

Remote diagnostics technology is embedded into physical products in order to prevent breakdowns by monitoring the products’ condition via sensors. However, this technology also hides indirect possibilities to monitor the users. The aim of this paper is to explore how remote diagnostics technology changes surveillance and its ethical consequences by studying which surveillance dilemmas users and...
